With restrictions relaxing and many people going on their first trip abroad for a while, parts of Europe is set to explode in popularity as tourists search for stunning views and areas full of culture further from home.
Paris, Rome and Madrid for example are eternal favourites, classic at any time of the year, so we will look at places that maybe you haven’t considered for a trip to Europe yet. With more and more countries in Europe styling themselves as trendy destination hotspots, we will give you the ultimate low-down into a couple of the most stunning European Destinations in 2022.
Croatia
Croatia is a beautiful country full of both sweeping landscapes and sprawling ancient towns, and with Croatia’s distinct climate zones, it really is the country to suit any holidaymaker or intrepid explorer.
Croatia is home to 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites, from its grand national parks forged by wilderness, or the beautiful architecture carved by man. If rugged wilderness is your style, check out the stunning waterfalls, caves and lakes of Plitvice Lakes National Park, with its unique forms carved by thousands of years of water eroding over limestone and chalk. The park is home to many rare and endangered animal species including bears, wolves and rare birds, so make sure to bring a camera!
Or, if you prefer something a bit more urban, the Old City of Dubrovnik in the very South of the country. With its winding streets and ancient fortifications, it has been used during the filming of the popular television series Game of Thrones due to its magical fantasy look.
These are just a couple of examples to highlight the duality of Croatia, the wild, sweeping landscapes and the old towns and villages packed with history and culture. We haven’t even mentioned the capital city of Zagreb, or other popular destination towns like Split, there really is so much to explore in this country.
Slovenia
Another country that is growing rapidly in popularity due to its astounding areas of natural beauty and superb architecture is Slovenia. As with Croatia, Slovenia is currently relatively overlooked when it comes to choosing holiday destinations in Europe, so you can find some incredible prices when you visit.
Known for its mountainous landscape and fairytale castles, places in Slovenia like the idyllic Lake Bled which represent a perfect meeting of the two are becoming increasingly popular, but with Slovenia still being relatively lesser-known, you can explore a stunning area without the large crowds normally associated with popular tourist destinations.
As well as exploring the countryside, Slovenia’s capital city of Ljubljana is the smallest capital in Europe, so is easy to walk around and explore fully on foot. Its size does not indicate how much culture, art and history are crammed into such a small place though, and it really has to be seen to be believed. Winner of the European Best Destination 2022, you can be sure that this city is ready to become the next hot destination in Europe.
These are just a couple of our top picks for the more up-and-coming destinations in Europe. We didn’t have space to mention all that these countries have to offer but finding out what those things are is a large part of the fun when journeying to less-documented places.
